| Sensing Geography Tue, 05 Aug 2008 00:03:00 EST Recently, I saw photographs of the surface of Mars transmitted by the multi-tasking Phoenix Lander. As this little laboratory was completing its 422 million-mile journey to the Red Planet, I was monitoring tornado-spawning thunderstorms in a swath of states from Oklahoma to Minnesota, thanks to satellite images broadcast by The Weather Channel. These images reminded me of how amazed I am at our ability to remotely sense our world and beyond. But this summer I'm leading a group of geography graduate students on a field trip where we're going to engage in the opposite of remote sensing. I'm calling it an exploration of the sense of place. |

A brainstorm conceived by someone north of the Mason-Dixon line? |
