| UPDATED: 8:56 p.m. Police blame driver of abandoned car for 8-vehicle pile-up on I-20 Mon, 21 Apr 2008 11:00:00 EST West Monroe police late today were still searching for the man who abandoned a car on Interstate 20 and caused an eight-car wreck in which three people were injured. The pile-up began about 9:28 a.m. Police said an unnamed Interstate Dodge employee abandoned a company car, a 1990 LeSabre, on the interstate when it stopped working. Seven vehicles were stopped behind the stalled car when an 18-wheeler carrying wood chips struck the back of the seventh vehicle, a 1996 Ford Ranger, leading the remaining seven cars to collide into one another. Ironically, the stalled vehicle was the only car undamaged in the incident. West Monroe police officer Eric Newton said the driver of the chip truck that sparked the collisions probably could not stop in time to avoid striking the last vehicle because of the weight of his load. He was not cited. A man and woman in the Ford Ranger, David McKenzie, 42, and Belle Love, 55, both of Oklahoma City, had to be extricated from the vehicle. They sustained non life-threatening injuries and were taken to Glenwood Regional Medical Center for treatment, police said. Barbara Williams, 52, of Farmerville, who was in one of the other vehicles, was also taken to Glenwood Regional Medical Center for treatment for head pains, police said. The driver of the abandoned vehicle is expected to be charged with hit and run, a misdemeanor. Newton said the man would have avoided charges had he stayed with the vehicle until officers arrived. Arrested at the scene was Derlance Ellis, 28, of Monroe. He was charged with driving a vehicle without registration and with a suspended license. Oil and debris covered the westbound lanes of the interstate. The wreck slowed traffic for hours, and the lanes were not cleared until 11:11 a.m. It occurred about 100 yards from the Stella-Mill exit bridge. In addition to the 18-wheeler carrying wood chips, a second 18-wheeler, five passenger vehicles and a 2008 Dodge Durango in use by the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office were involved. Newton said it was a good thing all occupants were wearing their seat belts at the time or the injuries could have been more serious. "If they (the driver and passenger in the Ford Ranger) had gone out the window we would have been working a double fatality, probably," said Newton. "This is proof that using seat belts saves lives." |
