| Body near Jennings may be that of missing tourist Sat, 19 Apr 2008 03:52:00 EST The Associated Press JENNINGS — Authorities believe they have found the remains of a young Israeli tourist killed by a hitchhiker while travelling the Gulf Coast. Tests have to be done and it could be another week before the remains are positively identified as those of Ran Mesika, 22. However, Mesika's father, Shimon Mesika, who hopes to return the remains to Israel, believes his son's skeleton has been found. "I don't need to wait for a DNA test. I know exactly what I see," the father said Thursday as he stood near the site where the bones were found. Jonathan Lee Vernier, 36, was convicted last week on federal charges of carjacking with intent to cause death for killing Ran Mesika with a tire iron in the parking lot of a Lake Charles Wal-Mart. Vernier was believed to have dumped the body somewhere off of Interstate 10 while traveling east through Louisiana, but until this week, there had been few good leads and many wrong turns in the search for the remains. The break came after the carjacking trial last week, when Vernier responded to the father's request for help in locating his son's body. Washington said the task was still difficult because Vernier, a prison escapee from Colorado, was not familiar with the area, and the site where the human remains have been found looks like much of rural southwest Louisiana: a drainage canal amid crawfish ponds and rice fields. The search ultimately focused on a few dozen feet along a drainage canal southwest of Jennings. The human remains were found scattered in the water and along the bank, possibly spread by weather and animals. A forensic anthropologist at LSU is working to reconstruct the skeleton, and FBI labs are performing analyses of DNA and dental record comparisons. |
